In 2009 Luke Kemp and Nicholas Lawrence founded ASSEMBLY _projects as a collaborative platform for the practice and investigation of making and exhibiting art, coordinating events and producing publications which showcase a broad range of artistic collaboration.
For Making Use, Kemp and Lawrence have expanded their interest in the production and presentation of artwork by crossing the boundaries between fine art, product design, graphic design and the curation of exhibitions.
Investigating the implication different market contexts have on the value and function of objects, Kemp and Lawrence have designed and commissioned a series of stools by a professional cabinet maker. These stools have the dual function of operating as stands on which publications are displayed as well as pieces of furniture on which the viewer can sit and read.
At Latymer Projects, these pieces will be exhibited alongside a series of screen prints which depict the stools in a minimal, abstracted form. The visual reductions operate as symbols in Kemp and Lawrence’s arrangement, working to establish relationships and associations between the materials they present.
